Could there be a positive to come out of Manchester City’s poor recent run?

Manchester City’s poor recent run of form continued last night. They fell to a 2-nil defeat to Juventus last night in Turin in a crucial Champions League fixture. The loss means Pep Guardiola’s side has now won one game in their past ten matches in all competitions. That is a barren run by any measurement. But could there be a positive to emerge from Manchester City’s poor run of recent form? There may not seem to be one right now but there could be one major one in time.

As each game passes it is clear to see what Manchester City’s issues are on the pitch. Injuries to key players have depleted Pep Guardiola’s squad. A host of players are showing the effects of age and having climbed the proverbial mountain six times over. Players such as Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and even Kevin De Bruyne are showing signs of age. That is just part of the game and what happens when players get to the end of their careers.

But the positive that could emerge from Manchester City’s poor recent run is that the City hierarchy can see what issues and areas need to be addressed. The weaknesses in Pep Guardiola’s squad are clear to see. There is a rebuild coming to the Manchester City squad. There are too many holes in this current squad and they have been ruthlessly exposed of late. Now, Txiki Begiristain in January, and Hugo Viana, when he arrives, will have a clear picture of what they must do to rebuild the City’s ageing and ailing squad. Where they start remains to be seen but the picture is now becoming clearer of what needs to be done.

Manchester City will enter Sunday’s Manchester derby with one win from their past ten games. At the moment there don’t appear to be many positives to take from City’s play. But a big positive may emerge. That is the Manchester City hierarchy can see exactly what needs to be done to rebuild Pep Guardiola’s squad. Perhaps in time that will be the positive to come from Manchester City’s recent run.
