AC Milan and Inter could abandon their respective projects in San Donato and Rozzano to build a ‘new’ San Siro after all, according to a report.

Corriere dell Sera (via MilanNews) write that confirmation of this came yesterday when delegations from the two clubs met with the Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala, the Minister of Sport and Youth Abodi, the Minister of Culture Giuli and the Superintendent of Fine Arts Emanuela Carpani to talk about San Siro.

More specifically, Milan and Inter should and could soon submit an expression of interest regarding the construction of a shared stadium, which will include the purchase of the San Siro area, the development of the surrounding areas and the redevelopment of the existing stadium.

If this project were to be accepted, however, not much of the old San Siro might remain. The Superintendency had already given the go-ahead to keep only a part of the second tier, the one strictly subject to constraints.

The idea is that ‘a memory, a vestige of the stadium, which will be incorporated into the redevelopment project of the area’, writes the paper. It adds: ‘A light constraint that has now also received the blessing of Minister Giuli’.

The main issue – as well as one of the decisive points to continue with the operation – has therefore been tackled by Milan and Inter, even if not all have been removed from the table. For example, the opinion of the Revenue Agency is still missing.

The agency must determine how much it will cost the clubs to buy San Siro and the surrounding areas from the council, and then there is the political question of how long the project will hold up to the protests that will return incessantly given that San Siro would be partly demolished.

In the face of all this, Milan are still keeping the San Donato project alive, with a preference that would now seem to be obvious. However, the idea is that the new stadium at San Siro would be presented in Spring 2025 and completed in 2029-30, provided that there are no other hitches in the meantime.
