Dani Carvajal, vice-captain of Real Madrid, was awarded the Gold Medal of the Community of Madrid on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by regional president Isabel Diaz Ayuso and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

During her speech honouring Carvajal, Diaz Ayuso took the opportunity to deliver a sharp remark directed at Los Blancos’ arch-rivals, FC Barcelona – a comment that quickly went viral on social media.

“Let’s not forget that Dani Carvajal has more Champions League titles than Barcelona in their entire history. I’ll leave it at that,” the Community of Madrid president said, drawing applause from the audience.

Diaz Ayuso continued with praise for Carvajal, who missed most of the season with an ACL injury but is now closing in on a return.

“A native of Leganes, he laid the first stone of Real Madrid City alongside Di Stéfano. He was literally cementing the path that would later lead him to lift six Champions League trophies and over 30 titles – all without forgetting his roots,” she said.

“He is now working to return as soon as possible, and hopefully, he will do so in the first edition of the Club World Cup.”

Continuing, Diaz Ayuso added: “This medal rewards a career achieved through great sacrifice, but also a way of being – both on and off the pitch.

“Real Madrid are one of our best ambassadors, and I want to thank the club for taking the Spain brand to every corner of the planet.”

Carvajal: “Proud to represent my community and my country”

After receiving the honour, Carvajal addressed those present at the event, expressing his pride and honour to represent the Community of Madrid, while also thanking Real Madrid president Perez.

“It is an absolute honour to wear the medal of this Community on my chest. I also want to thank my president, without whom this successful career would not have been possible. This distinction represents that I am from Madrid, from Leganes,” he said.

“My roots are here, and I enjoy my homeland, my Community, and my country every day. I am very proud to be from Madrid and to carry this flag and this Community everywhere in the world,” concluded Carvajal.
