Holding Set for Colorado Rapids Move After Palace Exit Agreed

MLS Beckons for Out-of-Favour Palace Defender

Rob Holding is set to sign for MLS outfit Colorado Rapids, pending international clearance, as reported by Sky Sports. The 28-year-old will join on an 18-month contract after Crystal Palace sanctioned a free transfer despite one year remaining on his deal.

Holding had interest from Championship clubs Sheffield United and Wrexham, but opted for a move to the United States in search of regular football. The centre-back has struggled for minutes at Selhurst Park, making just one appearance since arriving from Arsenal in 2023.

A loan spell at Sheffield United last season offered some respite, but it did little to change his standing in the Palace squad. For Holding, the move represents a new chapter after a frustrating spell in South London.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For many Crystal Palace supporters, Rob Holding’s departure barely registers as a surprise. His time at the club has been underwhelming, his presence more symbolic of an awkward squad reshuffle than a meaningful defensive addition. Arriving from Arsenal with hopes of stabilising the back line, Holding was quickly bypassed by more dynamic and reliable options.

The loan to Sheffield United was a last-gasp attempt at relevance, but the fact he returns and leaves on a free suggests the coaching staff had long since moved on. That said, there is no animosity. Palace fans respect the professionalism, if not the performances.

What this move really reflects is the shifting value of squad players in the modern Premier League. A club like Palace can no longer afford to carry players on wages without impact. Moving Holding on, even for free, feels like a wise trimming of the wage bill.

From the player’s perspective, MLS is a sensible choice. The league has improved tactically and commercially, and for a 28-year-old centre-back looking for regular minutes and a fresh start, it offers a fair platform.

Ultimately, this is a parting of ways that suits everyone.
