FLW's Sheffield United fan pundit has weighed in on Rhian Brewster's current contract situation
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Rhian Brewster is currently negotiating his future with Sheffield United, with the forward still yet to strike an agreement with the club.
With the rest of the first-team squad under contract, Brewster is the only player whose future still needs to be resolved.
Brewster became United's club-record signing when he arrived from Liverpool for a fee of £23.5 million in October 2020, but it is fair to say he has struggled to live up to that price tag, scoring just nine goals and providing four assists in 119 appearances over the past five years.
Football League World’s Sheffield United fan pundit, Jimmy (AKA Blades Ramble), believes that it may be time for the club and player to part ways.
“Rhian Brewster is an anomaly,” exclaimed Jimmy. “He's had such bad luck with injuries. He’s had a very stop-start career at Sheffield United, in terms of being unable to get a consistent run in the side.
“But, these last six months, he seems to have really improved. We've still not found his ideal position.
“He was signed as a striker. He's played in the No. 10, he's played on the right wing, at times he's played on the left wing, but he has been very good towards the end of the season.
“There is always the caveat that he has been in the shop window, and I do believe that's the thing with some players. Whatever happens with Brewster, I wish him all the best because, as a person and as a character, he is exactly what you want at your football club.
“He’s always picking up players, always bubbly and picking up the mood in camp. But if I was forced to say either way, I think he will leave Sheffield United this summer, because I think the deal would have been done already.
“I'm not sure if he gets another move in the Championship, if he commands the same wages that he's hoping for. Maybe he could go to someone like Birmingham who are willing to spend a lot of money. I could also see him going to the SPL and playing Rangers or Celtic.
“I would be happy to keep him because I think he's been very good these last six months, but I’m leaning more towards him leaving now.”
Brewster’s time at Bramall Lane had been clouded in disappointment and unfulfilled potential up until recently, with his superb performances during the run-in showing glimpses of what he was bought to do.
His winner in the Steel City derby at Hillsborough was legacy-defining, and multiple other excellent showings may have changed a lot of people’s opinions on the forward.
Chris Wilder has made it clear that he is a big fan of Brewster, recently stating that Sheffield United "have not seen the best" of him, but as discussions continue over his future, it remains to be seen whether owners Steve Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy share that view.
However, Brewster's overall goal record during his time at Bramall Lane does not make for good reading, particularly given the significant
fee the club paid for his services, and United must now decide whether he has done enough to earn a new contract.
