City’s EDS began our EFL Trophy campaign with a thrilling 5-1 triumph over League Two outfit Oldham on Tuesday evening.
After a calm but composed first half for City, our Elite Development Squad took a deserved three-goal lead into the break.
Mahamadou Sangare opened his City account with a cool finish before Justin Oboavwoduo’s hard work in midfield was rewarded with his second in two games. Ashton Muir then made it three with a first-time finish.
Luke Hannant converted from the penalty spot in the opening minutes of the second half and showed City would need to stay alert to secure all three points.
But Wilkinson’s side showed no sign of slowing down despite Oldham pulling a goal back. Sangare and Muir both secured their braces and confirmed City’s place at the top of Group E.
City, backed by committed support at a mild Boundary Park started brightly, but two shots from Emilio Lawrence on 27 minutes was the first time either goalkeeper was tested.
The first was blocked by Charlie Olson before the second, which looked set to nestle into the top right corner, was denied by the outstretched hand of Tom Donaghy.
Ben Wilkinson’s side finally found the breakthrough on 38 minutes, with Mahamadou Sangare scoring his first for the Club since signing in the summer.
The forward guided home Emilio Lawrence’s low cross from the left. And it wasn’t long before Lawrence had another assist.
This time, he teed up Justin Oboavwoduo on the counter. The forward placed his effort into the far-right corner on 42 minutes.
It's fair to say it was the perfect first-half performance, which was topped off with Ashton Muir adding his name to the scoresheet.
Sangare turned provider when he played a perfectly weighted pass into the path of an onrushing Muir who smashed home with his first touch, punishing Oldham on the counter.
Luke Hannant sparked some life into the Oldham side when he converted from the penalty spot on 52 minutes following a foul on Kane Drummond by Femi Fapetu.
Another high press from City, however, saw Sangare slot home his second of the evening on 69 minutes to restore our three-goal lead and deflate the League Two side.
Despite being in the closing stages of the game, City continued to move the ball with pace and purpose. Muir scored his second with a composed left-footed finish to complete our 5-1 win.
