In INEOS’ bid to recruit some of the brightest prospects in world football, develop them, and build for the future, Manchester United have found themselves linked with Sunderland’s Chris Rigg.

Rigg is among the most exciting talents English football has to offer. Still only 18, he has already racked up 74 senior appearances in red and white, showing a level of maturity that many seasoned professionals still strive for.

Crowned Championship Apprentice of the Year for 2024–25, Rigg earns praise for his progressive play. He receives the ball comfortably in the final third and drives at defences with ease.

He has unpredictability to his game and possesses the rare ability to end his dribbles with a shot, something that keeps defenders constantly guessing.

Naturally, top clubs have taken notice of his brilliance, with some comparing him to Jude Bellingham for the impact he has made in the Championship.

United rate Rigg highly

United tracked Rigg closely throughout last season. Early this year, scouts were dispatched from Old Trafford to watch the teenage sensation in action.

There was a report relayed by The Peoples Person claiming INEOS had placed the young midfielder near the top of their summer 2025 transfer shortlist.

United’s decision-makers reportedly viewed Rigg as a “must-have” talent and were keen to get a deal over the line.

While some expected Sunderland to be approached with a £25 million offer believed to be enough to seal the deal, no formal move has materialised.

Rigg commits his future to Wearside

Instead, the Hebburn native has now penned a new deal with the Black Cats.

The Premier League newcomers have tied down their academy product on a long-term contract until 2030.

This new deal eases the pressure Sunderland faced regarding Rigg’s future, especially with top clubs like United circling.

Speaking about his new deal, the midfield prodigy says:

“It feels great to sign this new contract. There was only ever one ambition I had, and that was to agree a long-term deal here. It’s been an incredible journey since I made my debut at 15, and I love playing here and being here every day, so I’m absolutely buzzing.”

With this new deal in place, United may have let another chance to land a top prospect on the cheap slip away.

However, now that Rigg is playing in the Premier League, United may continue scouting him and assess whether to make a move. If they do, though, they will likely have to pay more than they would have this summer.
