Former assistant manager Powell has opened up on how bad things have got at Hillsborough under the maligned Owls owner

Former Sheffield Wednesday assistant manager Chris Powell has revealed that he did not speak to disgraced owner Dejphon Chansiri once in his 20 months at the club, as he revealed some of the behind-the-scenes goings on at Hillsborough.

Heading into the new Championship season, the Owls are in a state of crisis, with a lack of funds available at the club and no takeover currently in sight, leaving Danny Rohl's former assistant Henrik Pedersen in charge of a squad of just 16 senior players, and not knowing whether the re-signing of Barry Bannan has been able to be registered with the EFL.

Whilst Pedersen stayed at Wednesday to take over as head coach from Rohl, his other assistant - the aforementioned Powell - decided to leave, and he's now opened up on what life has really been like at the stricken South Yorkshire outfit.

Sheffield Wednesday are still under numerous embargoes from the EFL for failing to pay their own players and also other clubs for transfer instalments, whilst their fee-paying transfer restrictions have been extended until the end of the 2027 January transfer window.

It remains to be seen if and when a takeover to rid Chansiri of the club will go through, but after his exit from Wednesday, Powell has let loose on the lack of structure of the club's hierarchy.

"What's still coming out now, I haven't been into the training ground for a number of weeks, is that the lack of clarity and communication at the time," Powell told The Sports Agents podcast.

"And to be honest Mark, there's no-one to speak to. There's no board of directors, there hasn't been a CEO there for a number of years, there's no as it is these days a sporting director.

"Basically, people will get an email saying 'We know times are hard and it's very difficult. We're trying to resolve the situation', but that's it.

"But at Sheffield Wednesday, you have no one, and the owner - I never spoke to him in 20 months, not once.

"I suppose the real upsetting part of all of this is that actually the not knowing - it's the not knowing if you're going to get paid, not knowing if it's going to be sold, not knowing if we can fulfill a fixture - it's the not knowing for the players, and the supporters."

Sheffield Wednesday fan anger at Dejphon Chansiri will only increase after Chris Powell revelations

It was never going to be too long before past Owls players or staff started to tell all about what was going on at the club - Barry Bannan was very forthcoming to talkSPORT despite signing a new contract at Hillsborough, but Powell's claims are truly unsurprising.

There appears to be only one key figure running the club and that is Chansiri, and since his financial struggles ensued, there has been a distinct lack of communication between himself and the players and staff - that cannot go on any longer.

Henrik Pedersen's squad is thread-bare going into Sunday's clash with Leicester City, and right now the club cannot even sign new players due to the restrictions the EFL have placed on them thanks to Chansiri's actions - it's all set up for a real struggle of a campaign in the Championship.

A takeover doesn't look close whatsoever, but the pressure must be put on the Thai businessman to sell up and potentially reduce his asking price so that Wednesday can be saved.
