Manchester United put in an emphatic performance as they defeated Hong Kong 3-1 on Friday.
In what was the last match in their pre-season stopover in Asia, Man United were looking to end it on a win, especially after coming up short against the ASEAN All Stars.
Needless to say, they didn’t disappoint, taking a colossal 28 shots in what was a highly attacking performance that surely thrilled their fans in Hong Kong.
While United continued to ruthlessly pressure the hosts’ defence throughout the match, it was only in the second half that they managed to reap the rewards of their efforts.
At the heart of their success was substitute striker Chido Obi.
Coming on at half-time, it did not take long at all for Obi to get going. To be precise, it took just five minutes for him to find the back of the net with a superb strike to draw United level. Despite being heavily marked upon receiving the ball from Manuel Ugarte, Obi had the speed and wit to outpace his mark and get the shot off.
Later in the half, Obi struck again, heading a Mason Mount cross into the back of the net to put United in the lead before Ayden Heaven wrapped up the win seconds from the final whistle.
Despite playing just 45 minutes, Obi was deadly from the get-go, making 10 touches within the opposition’s box to make life exceptionally difficult for the Hong Kong defenders.
He managed to get six shots on goal, three of which were on target, thereby showing how clinical he can be.
Of course, he scored two goals, thereby being aptly rewarded for his fine display.
While Rasmus Hojlund struggled up front, unable to penetrate the Hong Kong defence, Obi was far more clinical.
It’s difficult to believe that he is so effective at just 17 years of age. Should he continue to produce performances like this, manager Ruben Amorim will find it difficult not to hand Obi more minutes as United look to rebuild ahead of the new season.
