Alfie Gilchrist is set leave Chelsea on permanent deal this summer with several second-tier sides interested in the defender.

Gilchrist spent last season on loan at Sheffield United and made 32 appearances as the Blades reached the Championship play-off final. The 21-year-old has returned to Chelsea this summer following his loan spell at Bramall Lane and is now weighing up his options.

It is expected that Gilchrist will depart on a permanent basis with Fabrizio Romano reporting that multiple Championship clubs are interested in the defender.

Gilchrist was named Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year in 2024 and featured 17 times for the West Londoners in 2023/24. He scored his first senior goal in a 6-0 win over Everton in April 2024.

However, Chelsea’s deep defensive options are set to see Gilchrist move on. As an academy product, his sale will count as complete profit in the club’s Premier League Profit and Sustainability calculations.

Middlesborough have been named as a potential option for the defender, with the North East club set to rebuild following the exit of Michael Carrick as head coach. Former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards is set to be named as Carrick’s replacement at The Riverside.
