The last we’ve heard from top sources on the Mike Maignan to Chelsea deal, things were really jammed up.
Chelsea had said they were not going to pay more than €15m for the goalkeeper, while AC Milan were insisting they wouldn’t accept less than €20m. It’s a pitifully small amount in top level transfer terms, but it seemed both sides were determined to not budge.
Mike Maignan takes a goal kick for AC Milan.
That was made worse by today’s update from the Athletic’s Simon Johnson, who claimed that Chelsea “are not too confident of agreeing a fee for Mike Maignan with AC Milan as thins stand right now.”
Bizarrely, it seems they really are willing to miss out on an excellent player who can immediately improve the team because they’re arguing over a fraction of the sort of money they’ve spent on the likes of Omari Kellyman and Robert Sanchez.
But there is some hope Football Insiders’ Mick Brown is sure the Blues will see sense and get a deal done at some point.
“Chelsea want a new goalkeeper, there’s no doubt there,” he wrote.
“They’re not afraid of spending money and it looks like that is set to continue, so while they’re trying to bring the fee down, it’s not the be all and end all. Milan have their asking price, Chelsea have what they say they’re willing to pay.
“It seems to be that it’s in everybody’s interest to get this over the line, so in all likelihood a compromise will be reached.
“Chelsea will get closer to what Milan want, even if they don’t end up paying the full asking price,” he concluded.
With the Club World Cup registration deadline tonight at 7pm, the race is on.
