L’Equipe reports that Chelsea might be tempted to sign a centre-back in this winter transfer window with Enzo Maresco’s options at the back diminished in the wake of Wesley Fofana’s (24) injury. The Italian manager said in his pre-game presser that the France international centre-back could be unavailable for the rest of the season – a serious blow to the Blues’ ambitions as Fofana was a regular starter at the back. The Saint-Etienne youth product started 12 Premier League games prior to his hamstring injury sustained during the Blues’ 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.
With Fofana on the sidelines for the foreseeable and fellow countryman Benoît Badiashile (23) also out with a hamstring injury, Maresca can only rely for now on three senior centre-backs with Lewi Colwill (21), Axel Disasi (26) and Tosin Adarabioyo (27). Considering Chelsea remain involved in three competitions, notably the UEFA Conference League, and that the Blues are targeting, at least, a top-four finish to return to the highly lucrative Champions League, signing a centre-back would make sense for the London-based Premier League side.
