Despite Mainoo’s rise to the top of the game Mail Sport have reported the youngster is thought to be at a stalemate in negotiations over a new deal with the Red Devils.

The report adds that Chelsea are leading the chase for the England international if he decides to leave Old Trafford and seek a new challenge elsewhere, but adds there’s bound to be competition from other Premier League clubs and abroad.

Mainoo has two and half years left on his existing contract at Old Trafford.

Mail Sport state Mainoo is thought to be concerned about the direction the club is going in and his chances of playing Champions League football.

The Blues currently have Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia as their main midfield options, although the club haven’t been able to rely on Lavia due to his injury issues.

Chelsea do have youngster Andrey Santos who is thriving on loan at Strasbourg and looks set to have a role in the squad next season, whilst they are weighing up whether to recall Lesley Ugochukwu from Southampton this month.

Mainoo is clearly a very talented player and has already shown that he can perform at the top level, but it must be said any move to Chelsea is seemingly still a long way off and he still has plenty of time to negotiate a new deal with United.

Chelsea could well be looking at midfield signings in the summer given Cesare Casadei, Carney Chukwuemeka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are unlikely to be at the club at the start of next season.

Mainoo would certainly tick the box from a talent stand point and he’s in the age range Chelsea look to recruit in, but it very much remains to be seen if he’s actually needed by Chelsea.
