Chelsea have reportedly begun negotiations with AC Milan over a deal to sign Rafael Leao from the Italian side.

Leao is regarded as one of Europe’s best wide players and Chelsea have made the 25-year-old a leading target for the summer transfer window.

AC Milan have endured a tough campaign in Serie A and face the prospect of missing out on Champions League qualification. The Rossoneri are currently eight, seven points adrift of the top four.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Chelsea have opened dialogue with Milan over a potential deal.

The two teams share a good working relationship, having conducted deals for Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fikayo Tomori in recent years. Joao Felix also joined Milan on loan from Chelsea in January and could be included as part of any deal.

Milan are understood to value the Portugal international in excess of €100m (£82.5m).

Chelsea are determined to bring in another elite attacking option to complement Cole Palmer. Mykhailo Mudryk is currently suspended after an adverse finding in a drug test, while Jadon Sancho has faded following a bright start at Stamford Bridge. Christopher Nkunku is also expected to move on in the summer in search of regular first-team football.

Leao has scored 68 goals in 247 appearances in all competitions for Milan and has been included in the Serie A Team of the Season in each of the last three campaigns. He was named Serie A’s Most Valuable Player in 2021/22 as Milan won the title and led the league for assists last season.
