Chelsea away, Headhunters, Time Warp Terry and all things rosy at Newcastle United…

Since we have got Chelsea away on Sunday.

How about a trip down memory lane, for a League Cup game we played down there almost 32 years ago to the day.

It was 28 October 1992 and for once, all things were rosy in the garden of St James’ Park under King Kev.

We had started the season straight out of the blocks, so a trip to Chelsea held no fears.

Me and Monty decided to get the train down, totally oblivious in terms of how we planned to getting home, just me and him.

We had done some planning though, as when we got to King’s Cross we were meeting up with one of the main Chelsea faces “Time Warp Terry.” So-called by Chargesheet for his love of all things skinhead clothing fashion-wise.

We get on train already well canned up (Miller Lite) and we’re off, making it into London just in time for blurred o’clock.

Meet the Warp who has got us a boozer lined up not far from Stamford Bridge.

Green Park? More beers in a boozer and then it is getting into “one more before kick-off pint.”. So probably 7.40pm.

By this time the jukebox was belting out and in truth we were making a show of ourselves.

Last round was bought and as I’m leaving the serving area, I look at the manager on the phone, who’s looking at us and quite animated, Terry spots him as well, so it is pints necked and off to ground ASAP.

We can see the floodlights, when I hear glass breaking with the then traditional cockney greeting of “cam on you northern cants….”

Hello sobriety my new friend.

As 30 of the Headhunters (Chelsea firm back in the day) front us. Me and Monty immediately go into “we’re getting a kicking here but the first one is getting it” mode. When the Warp steps in between the two factions and calmly tells the Headhunters “No lads, not tonight, they are with me and get a pass.”

“Yes, no worries Tel” they say and just disappear back into the night (well apart from the one who barged into me so got a rib tickler).

We are now in the ground with Terry in the away end with us and it’s 1-1, when a ball comes into our box, I’m praying please anyone but not mackem Harford… 2-1 and we’re out.

Postscript to this.

British rail announcement halfway through the second half, there will be an additional train from King’s Cross to Newcastle to take the fans home who have made the journey tonight home.
