Chelsea’s summer is into its most busy spell, with a slew of players needing to find temporary or permanent destinations for the season ahead.
One by one they’re getting ticked off the list, with some barely making an impact on the news cycle. Today another outgoing loan was confirmed by the club on their official website.

Caleb Wiley signed for Chelsea last summer from Atlanta United, and spent the first half of the season on loan with our sister club Strasbourg. However injuries made it hard for him to break through there, and in our standard mid-season shuffle of assets he was moved to Watford in the Championship, freeing up a foreign loan spot for the likes of Joao Felix and Renato Veiga to use.
Wiley had much more success at Watford from February onwards, making 10 appearances, and it makes sense to send him back there now. Picking up where he left off should allow him to start the season strong, and after a year of adaptation we should see the best of Wiley now.
There doesn’t seem to be much belief that the USA international is ever going to be a player good enough to start for Chelsea, but there is certainly a sense that a strong run in the Championship could lead to transfer interest in him.
We paid around £8.5m to sign him, so a profit is certainly possible if we can get him to impress somewhere over the course of a season.
Chelsea’s first team is still without a backup left back, but Wiley clearly isn’t seen as a solution to that issue at the moment.
