FLW’s Charlton Athletic pundit has given his thoughts on the Addicks turning down the chance to sign Lukasz Fabianski.
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk‘ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Charlton Athletic will be aiming to bolster their squad during the summer transfer window as they make their return to the Championship.
Nathan Jones helped guide the Addicks back to the second tier for the first time since 2020, triumphing in the play-off final over Leyton Orient at Wembley.
The London-based club will now be seeking to establish themselves as Championship regulars once again, and are sure to take inspiration from the likes of Oxford United and Portsmouth who have survived their first seasons back.
As Charlton look to get their summer spending underway, the club were reportedly offered the chance to sign veteran goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who is now a free agent after leaving Premier League outfit West Ham.
However, the report by journalist Rich Cawley states that Charlton have turned down the opportunity, with Jones preferring to add a younger goalkeeper this summer over an experienced option.
With this in mind, FLW's Charlton Athletic fan pundit has weighed in with his thoughts over the latest development.
Speaking to Football League World, Charlton Athletic fan pundit Sam White has backed Charlton's decision to move for a more youthful shot-stopper, but said the club should keep the door open to Lukasz Fabianski provided a deal doesn't take up a large part of their summer budget.
White said: “Charlton have been offered the chance to sign Lukasz Fabianski. Personally, I think it would be quite a good signing, and I think he can still do a job, even at 40 years old.
“However, from what I know, I think Nathan Jones and the Charlton hierarchy want someone younger than 40, presumably that could be late 20’s to mid-30’s, but they still want someone who is very well-experienced, and I presume can step into the player, coach role, similar to Danny Hylton.
“I think they’d want someone younger than 40, although as time goes on they might look to bring Fabianski in if he’s on a cheaper deal, and then that’s one less player to chase and sort out.”
The foundations of a successful team always start with the goalkeeper, and Charlton Athletic will definitely need a safe pair of hands if they are to avoid an instant relegation from the Championship.
You can understand the club's perspective of wanting a younger number one, with Nathan Jones showing a desire to build a team of players that can deliver success for the club over the long-term future, whereas the addition of Fabianski would only be for a season or two at best.
Only time will tell to see if Charlton can get their ideal target in between the posts, but if they are struggling to lure someone come the end of the window, then it might be a good idea to keep Fabianski in the picture should he fail to find a new home in that time.
At the age of 40, Fabianski has proven that he can still cut it in the Premier League, featuring 14 times in the top-flight last season for West Ham as he tussled it out with Alphonse Areola for a starting spot.
Entering the twilight period of his career, he has still showcased immense flexibility and agility, while his reflexes remain a sight to behold when coming to the Hammers' rescue at points last term.
