The first round of the new Champions League has been completed, so we take a look at the 36-team table and note the importance that goal difference will make this season.
The competition was expanded for the 2024-25 campaign and the format transformed, so sides now face eight different opponents – four at home and four away – with all the results going into a single table.
The top eight go directly into the Round of 16, the bottom eight are eliminated from Europe until next season, while the middle 16 go head-to-head in play-offs to reach the more traditional knockout phase.
With Matchday 1 completed, we see the winning teams at the top of the massive table and Bayern Munich are the leaders thanks to their 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb, a result that saw the Croatian side sack their coach already.
Celtic follow with a 5-1 win against Slovan Bratislava and Bayer Leverkusen swept Feyenoord aside 4-0 this evening.
There were some shock results, as Barcelona lost 2-1 to AS Monaco, but were reduced to 10 men after just 11 minutes by the Eric Garcia red card.
Juventus are the only Italian team to have won, 3-1 against PSV Eindhoven, as Inter drew 0-0 with Manchester City, Atalanta had the same result with Arsenal and Bologna against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Milan are rock bottom following their 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool.
