Former Chelsea and England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain has said Manchester City’s signing of Vivienne Miedema makes the Citizens a ‘frightening outfit’ in the WSL this season.
Manchester City missed out on the WSL title on goal difference last season following a brilliant title race with Chelsea.
City’s title challenge suffered a setback when WSL top scorer Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw saw her season prematurely ended in May. Gareth Taylor’s side have since added to their options with the capture of Miedema from Arsenal, with the Women’s Super League’s all-time top goal scorer arriving on a free transfer.
Ahead of the opening weekend of WSL action, where Miedema could debut against her former club, Chamberlain said the added firepower will make City tough to stop in 2024/25.
“I think they lost it last year because Bunny Shaw got injured at the end and they didn’t have anybody else that was going to necessarily score them those goals,” she told BBC Sport.
“So now bringing in Miedema to add to that goal scoring ability, if you’ve those two players top of the pitch at one point in time, they’re a pretty frightening outfit to go up against.
“They had a fantastic start, they beat Paris FC 5-0 in the Champions League qualifiers last week so they will be full of confidence going into the weekend and they’re a team that I think will definitely be up there again in the season.”
