It seems that the issues that FC Barcelona continue to face with injuries will not be going away any time soon. La Blaugrana already had a depleted squad and that only continues to become more evident. Despite still managing to get a convincing victory over Villarreal, Barcelona are now even worse off than before.
German goalkeeper and club captain Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has suffered a serious injury to his knee and he is expected to undergo surgery. Following that, it is also expected that his season is now over and that his return will now have to wait until the next season.
Unfortunately for a financially-trouble Barcelona side, there are a lot of limitations in terms of finding his replacement. The situation regarding the goalkeeper’s injury is so bad that even direct rivals cannot help but express their own sadness over the occasion and have sent kind words to the player.
In his recent press conference, as highlighted by SPORT, even Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti came forward to express his own sadness following Ter Stegen’s injury and sent him some kind words that wish him all the best in his recovery:
“I want to say that I feel very sorry when players like Ter Stegen get injured. I hope he can recover soon; he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. I wish him a quick recovery.”
While this could be a positive for Los Blancos, it would seem that Ancelotti’s words are genuine. However, it also further impacted the point he made right afterwards suggesting that while the footballing calendar cannot be change instantly, it is still a pressing matter that needs more attention:
“We can’t do much; the calendar won’t change this season. But at the very least, we need to reflect on it.”
Beyond Ter Stegen’s injury, however, both Barcelona and Real Madrid have upcoming fixtures to work their way towards. For the Catalan giants, their upcoming game will be against Getafe at home and Real Madrid will be taking on Deportivo Alaves at the Santiago Bernabeu.
