Newcastle United are considering a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is currently without a club following his departure from Everton.

The 28-year-old striker became a free agent at the end of June after running down his contract.

Newcastle need attacking reinforcements after Callum Wilson rejected a pay-as-you-play extension to his deal.

That decision has left Alexander Isak as the only proven senior centre-forward in the squad heading into the new season.

William Osula, signed from Sheffield United for £12 million last summer, is a development player and featured sparingly in his first campaign.

Although the club expects more from Osula this term, manager Eddie Howe is wary of the risk of relying solely on untested options if Isak suffers an injury.

Calvert-Lewin has long been admired by Newcastle, and a move was explored in previous summers, only for Everton’s £70m asking price to scupper the deal.

He now presents a more financially viable option for a club still working within budget limitations despite a planned rebuild.

The player is also attracting interest from Manchester United, who view him as a possible squad player amid a planned shake-up of their forward line.

Calvert-Lewin endured another injury-hit campaign last season, bagging just three goals and two assists in 26 Premier League appearances.

However, Howe admireshis physical presence, hold-up play and aerial ability – qualities that could offer a useful contrast to Isak’s more mobile style.

A short-term deal or appearance-based contract would suit Newcastle’s current structure, especially as they prioritise spending elsewhere.

The Magpies are close to finalising a £52 million move for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga, which will ease some attacking pressure.

With several other positions still to address, including a new goalkeeper and a right-sided centre-back, any deal for Calvert-Lewin would need to be considered carefully.
