Former Blue Glen Johnson has questioned Chelsea over their choice of signings under the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership.

Chelsea have once again been busy and have already signed Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro as they look to revamp their attack.

Another attacker joining hasn’t been ruled out, whilst the Blues are also thought to be in the market for a defender as they look to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad ahead of the new season.

Glen Johnson questions Chelsea signings

The Blues have signed a lot of attackers in the last few windows at huge expense, with Pedro Neto and Joao Felix joining last summer, as well as Jadon Sancho on loan.

Noni Madueke is set to leave for Arsenal, whilst Estevao Willian has joined, with Geovany Quenda set to arrive from Sporting Lisbon next summer, not to mention Christopher Nkunku and Raheem Sterling who also joined for big money under the ownership.

Chelsea clearly like a winger and versatile forward, but Johnson has shared concerns over how signing so many of this type of profile could unbalance the squad.

“They do seem to be buying a lot of ‘flary wingers’, if you like. And I would say it’s [unbalanced] in that regard, they seem to have a lot of very similar players in similar positions,” he told Mirror Football.

“But obviously they’re buying young, so they’re not all going to kick on from day one. So, I think long-term the process can work. But at the same time, for a club like Chelsea, they need to be competing sooner.”

Joao Felix set to leave

With signing so many players of similar profiles and in the same position, inevitably they aren’t all going to work out.

Felix, who only joined last summer from Atletico Madrid for £45m is already set to leave the club after just one season.
