FC Barcelona have been constantly pondering what kind of signings to make in the summer. Even though the club’s sporting director Deco hinted at what kind of signings could be brought in, there is always room for more. However, Barcelona know that they must be careful.
The club’s spending in the past has hardly been justifiable considering the kind of players that were brought in and the sporting returns that they offered to the club. However, when it comes to low-cost signings or free agents, there is little to no risk involved.
Fortunately for Barcelona, such players have even provided the team with some decent performances over the last few seasons. Inigo Martinez is a great example of this, as despite being a free agent when he first arrived at Barcelona, he is already one of Hansi Flick’s most important players.
However, when it comes to defenders, there are a lot of rumors suggesting that Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah could be the next signing for Barcelona. Aged 28, the German centre-back is renowned for his strength and defensive prowess, and his arrival as a free agent could be a big boost to the team’s overall depth.
Beyond just his defensive abilities, however, there may be an additional factor that could be the reason behind why Barcelona have chosen him as a good option to sign. As per Mundo Deportivo, one of the major reasons behind Barça’s decision to sign him is his great injury record.
Given the unfortunate record of certain Barcelona players and their recurring injuries, perhaps bringing in a reliable option could be a great move. For instance, Ronald Araujo’s availability right now is uncertain and Andreas Christensen is expected to return soon after a rather long recovery from recurring injuries.
Tah, on the other hand, has an exceptional record when it comes to avoiding major injuries. In fact, across the last seven seasons, the player has only missed 7 games in total due to injury. Since the 2018/2019 season, the German defender has missed on average only two games per season, and has missed only one game due to injury over the last three seasons.
Moreover, following a muscle tear in the 2017/2018 season that kept him sidelined for only 15 days, the player has not had a single muscle-related injury since then either. Other issues, such as flu or cold-based ones, have been the ‘injuries’ that have kept him sidelined on other occasions.
