Bristol City have made the choice of their next manager and are ‘set to appoint’ Gerhard Struber to succeed Liam Manning, according to journalist John Percy.
Manning led the Robins into a playoff spot in the Championship this season, but was then tempted away to take over at Norwich City.
Losing the highly rated boss was a big blow for Bristol City, who have been conducting an extensive managerial search for his replacement.
They now know the man they want in the shape of Struber, who impressed the club during talks.
Struber’s appointment as Bristol City boss will be confirmed later this week, giving the Robins certainty heading towards pre-season.
Struber, 48, is not new to the English football scene as he had a spell at Barnsley between 2019 and 2020.
Since then the Austrian has gone on to manage New York Red Bulls in the MLS, Red Bull Salzburg in his native Austria and, most recently, German giants 1.FC Koln.
Koln sacked Struber in May, with the club having won the 2. Bundesliga to secure promotion up to the Bundesliga.
When he was shown the door, Koln were top of the table and three points clear with two games remaining.
It remains to be seen how Struber copes with the limited resources at Bristol City while trying to steer the Robins up to the Premier League.
One former EFL star believes that Manning was right to take the Norwich job as the Bristol City owner did not back him enough and did not signal there would be a change to that approach.
Struber will get a full pre-season to get his ideas into the players and also have an influence on recruitment over the course of the transfer window this summer.
