FLW's Bristol City fan pundit has given his verdict on Jason Knight's future with the club
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Jason Knight has remained a Bristol City player going into the start of the Championship campaign despite summer transfer interest from the likes of Everton.
It was reported in May that the Toffees were scouting the midfielder with the view to a potential move this summer.
However, no move has materialised, with the new campaign set to get underway this weekend.
Any club that wants to sign the Irish international will have until 1 September to finalise a deal, or else he will remain at Ashton Gate until at least January.
When asked about Knight possibly remaining with the club, FLW’s Bristol City fan pundit Tom Rawle claimed that a series of dominos will need to fall for him to leave at this stage.
He is hopeful the midfielder will stay, and that it will take a big offer to convince the Robins to cash in now, and that he could cost between £12 to 15 million in January or next summer.
“I think there’d have to be some sort of dominos falling for that move to go through,” Rawle told Football League World.
“So I think either a top end Championship team would have to probably sell one of their better centre-midfielders, if not their best centre-midfielder, same as well for the bottom six Premier League teams as well.
“I was a little bit fearful with Brownhill leaving Burnley that they’re probably looking to fill that void at Burnley, but I think they’ve signed players elsewhere now.
“Realistically, I think we’ll probably keep him this window, I think it’ll be January or next summer when a big bid does come in for him.
“I say big bid, they’d probably be looking for anything around £12m-£15m, I think that would probably be a reasonable fee.
“But I’m reasonably confident of keeping him this window anyway, and if we are to get rid of him it would have to be for a big, big fee.
“I’d certainly and I’d certainly hope we would reinvest that money we would get if he was to go.”
Bristol City will begin their Championship campaign against Sheffield United this Saturday in a 5.30pm kick-off.
Knight was a key part of the Bristol City side last season as they reached a play-off place under Liam Manning.
It would be no surprise if transfer interest does materialise late in the window, as he’s someone with the potential to compete at the top end of the Championship, or maybe even in the Premier League.
But it should take a sizable fee to convince the Robins to cash in at this stage of the market given his importance to the side.
Keeping the 24-year-old would be great business by Bristol City, and potentially as important as any signing they make this window.
