Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove suddenly collapsed to the ground during the first half of his side’s home clash against Inter, prompting the match to be suspended and postponed over a medical emergency.
Many Viola and Nerazzurri footballers were in tears as they watched the 22-year-old leaving the pitch, but subsequent reports confirmed he regained consciousness after being taken to the hospital Careggi in Florence.

A product of Roma youth academy, the player joined Fiorentina last summer on loan after making 31 Serie A appearances in the previous season under José Mourinho and Daniele De Rossi.
Born in May 2002, Bove took his initial steps into football with local side Boreale Don Orione before moving to Roma’s youth academy in 2012.
He would grow up in the Giallorossi’s youth ranks until 2021, when he earned his first call-ups with the senior team and eventually made his Serie A debut under coach Paulo Fonseca in one of his side’s last games of the season against Crotone.
However, the arrival of José Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico proved a turning point for the midfielder’s career, as he would gradually win the trust of the Portuguese manager, who praised him by saying he was an ‘example’ and played like a ’30-year-old’ in May 2023, after watching Bove score against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League semifinal.
The Italian went on to establish himself as a starter, a status that was confirmed when Daniele De Rossi took over on Roma’s bench.
However, the club saw an occasion for profit in him as they decided to loan him out to Fiorentina, in a deal which included an obligation to buy, on the second-last day of the summer transfer window.
Coach Raffaele Palladino didn’t take long before showing his appreciation for the 22-year-old’s qualities, handing him 10 Serie A starts, including in the match against his former side Roma which, ironically, saw Bove score his first league goal for the Viola in their 5-1 thrashing of the Giallorossi.
The midfielder was also included in Fiorentina’s starting XI against Inter, when he suddenly collapsed after 15 minutes of play, sparking panic and tears from many players on the pitch. A report from the club later confirmed he was in intensive care, adding that “initial cardiological and neurological tests have ruled out acute damage to the central nervous system and the cardio-respiratory system”.
Everyone at Football Italia wishes him a speedy recovery.
