It was another day and another defeat for Borussia Dortmund in 2025, in what seems like an eternal deja vu from the previous match. In the seventh game of the Champions League—League Stage, BVB was defeated by Bologna 2-1 at Emilia-Romagna. It was the fourth straight loss in 2025 and the third loss in an international stage this season.
Despite taking the lead in the first half with a Panenka penalty from Serhou Guirassy, BVB did not offer much offensive threat to Bologna. The team mainly focused on long balls and counter-attacks but with low to no productivity. On the other hand, Bologna looked very dangerous in the flanks, especially with Ndoye taking up Groß, who was improvised as RB.
In the second half, Sahin made no changes, and Bologna looked more menacing than ever. Their goal seemed like a matter of time, and it happened in the most sufferable way possible. With two long balls, the same strategy Dortmund had been failing to impose throughout the match, Bologna came back 2-1 in less than five minutes.
Following the Italian side's turnaround, Dortmund offered almost no response as the players looked shaken by what happened. Overall, it was a spineless display from a team that barely survived through this match.
Headling now to the final game before the end of the League Phase, Dortmund will face FC Shakhtar Donetsk on January 29th. The Black-and-Yellows find themselves outside the top eight and will depend on other results to still have a shot at an early qualification to the round of 16.
