In an official press release, the family of Bordeaux’s Alberth Elis (28) have confirmed that he has woken up from an induced coma.

Elis was placed into an induced coma after suffering ‘severe head trauma’ during Bordeaux’s Ligue 2 match against Guingamp on Saturday. The match was stopped after 34 seconds when the Honduras international clashed heads with Guingamp’s Donatien Gomis (29).

The 28-year-old was then transferred to CHU Pellegrin in Bordeaux where he has since been receiving treatment. L’Équipe reported that the forward had been operated on overnight on Saturday and that early signs suggested that the operation was successful.

‘Gradually recovering’

Elis’ family have confirmed that he is ‘gradually recovering’ after waking up from the induced coma. Despite this positive development, the Bordeaux forward’s family have urged that they remain ‘cautious’ about his condition and believe ‘the next few days will be crucial’.
