Bologna are reportedly hoping to push forwards with contract negotiations with former Germany and Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels once Riccardo Calafiori’s move to Arsenal is completed, according to updates on Tuesday morning.

Bologna still keen on Hummels

Bologna are expecting Calafiori to leave within the next few weeks, and they will therefore need a replacement in time for their maiden Champions League campaign at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.

The Rossoblu have sounded out the possibility of signing Hummels on a free transfer, but have not yet begun formal negotiations, as they are still waiting for Calafiori’s move to go through.

According to reports from Sky Sport Italia, the 2014 World Cup winner has already turned down approaches from Saudi Arabia and has also rejected one from Ajax, but he has plenty of suitors in Serie A.

Adding to Bologna’s interest, newly-promoted Como, as well as Roma, Milan and reigning champions Inter have also been linked with a move for the veteran centre-back over the last few weeks.

Sky also report that Bologna have studied Cape Verde international Logan Costa as a potential alternative to Hummels, although the Toulouse defender is expected to cost somewhere in the region of €20m.
