A major update on the future of Blackburn Rovers chief executive Steve Waggott and the plan for head of football Rudy Gestede has been revealed.
Blackburn chief executive Steve Waggott is hoping to stay at the club for another year, despite the fierce fan criticism he has faced recently, with Rudy Gestede eventually tipped to succeed him.
That's according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon reporting via Patreon on Easter Sunday.
It’s no secret that Rovers fans want a change of ownership at the club, with supporters having been unhappy for some time at the way Venky’s have run Blackburn.
During their tenure, the club have gone from being in the Premier League to falling into League One, although they are now in their seventh straight season as a Championship outfit.
As revealed by Nixon, it is claimed that Waggott ‘plans to be around for a final season’, with Gestede, the club's current head of football operations, then seen as the man to replace him as chief executive.
Whilst the ultimate aim for Blackburn fans would be a change of ownership, they are also unhappy with the way they have been run on a day-to-day basis, which has brought Waggott into focus.
There have been calls for him to leave the club from those attending games, but Nixon has revealed that Waggott is not planning on stepping away.
Former Rovers striker Gestede is another who has been criticised by the fans, with him and Waggott recently asked to stay away from home games..
So, this would surely not be a popular decision if he was to take on such an influential role from Waggott in 12 months time.
You have to have real sympathy for the Blackburn fans, as the mismanagement at the club over the years will have been difficult for them to take.
Losing John Eustace earlier this season was the latest example of how things aren’t as they should be behind the scenes.
Despite Rovers pushing for promotion, he was willing to leave to join Derby in a relegation battle, and there’s still a very real chance they could be in League One next season.
Meanwhile, any chance of Blackburn going up has disappeared as they look set for a mid-table finish.
There has been a lack of ambition, communication and a general disregard for the supporters, who have seen their club endure a miserable past 10–15 years under the owners.
Waggott and Gestede have not made themselves popular with the way they have backed the owners, and this update indicates that nothing is going to change.
