Birmingham City are making major statement of intent as they close in on the loan signing of Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle.

Football League World exclusively reported that the 23-year-old, who played a key part in Sheffield United's promotion out of the Championship in the 2022/23 campaign and has since made 50 Premier League appearances at Molineux, is set for a move to the current League One champions in an initial loan deal, which will also include a purchase option.

The Blues are also in the final stages of negotiations with hometown boy Demarai Gray, and are in talks to sign Rennes striker Kyogo Furuhashi, too, but Doyle is, to many, the pick of the bunch, given his emergence through the Manchester City academy and his clear Premier League quality.

It's a real sign that Tom Wagner and the rest of the higher-ups at Birmingham are wasting no time in attempting to secure their top-flight status for the first time since 2011.

FLW's Birmingham City fan pundit, Jason Moore, feels that there hasn't been a better time to be a fan of his club, and that the reported incoming of Tommy Doyle will put the rest of the league on notice, if they weren't already.

Moore waxed lyrical about the ambition of the current Birmingham City ownership when he spoke to Football League World.

Ultimately, the players they have been linked to wouldn't usually bat an eyelid at a side coming up from League One, but the Blues are showing clear intent in making their Championship stay as short as possible.

"It just goes to show where the club is at and where the club thinks it's going to go this season," Moore said.

"Tommy Doyle is a massive, massive signing. He was class for Sheffield United two seasons ago and was good in a, let's be honest, pretty poor Wolves side.

"I think the fact that he's going to come to a team that's going to dominate the ball is going to suit him."

The links to the likes of Doyle and Furuhashi look like they're going to materialise, and given the already Championship-ready squad Chris Davies owned whilst in League One, there's no denying that Birmingham could be real contenders once again next season in the division above.

Moore continued, "We're not messing around, and if we get Doyle, a lot of other clubs are going to have to take us seriously about going up.

"I think they're going to be a little bit frightened and very jealous.

"There's never been a better time to be a Blues fan. I can't wait for this season and roll on Ipswich [on the opening day]," he concluded.

Birmingham, Tommy Doyle loan shows clear intent for back-to-back promotions

The Championship, on paper, looks more competitive than last season, with the three recently relegated Premier League sides joining the likes of Sheffield United, Coventry City as immediate contenders, and the likes of Middlesbrough, West Brom and Norwich City will be looking for vast improvements from last term.

But Birmingham City immediately fall under that category of potential promotion contenders purely due to the sheer ambition they have.

Tommy Doyle could very easily have remained in the Premier League next season, as Sunderland also held an interest in him, but he's chosen to go back down to the Championship with the expectation that they will only be there for a season.

The blueprint for back-to-back promotions is pretty recent, as shown by Ipswich Town's unlikely road to a Premier League return two years after playing in the third tier, and Tom Wagner is desperate to replicate this.

Birmingham aren't messing about in their quest to play in the Premier League, and the future truly is exciting for Blues fans.
