Palmeiras and Flamengo meet this Sunday at Allianz Parque for a match that highlights not only the top of the league table, but also the financial muscle and squad depth of Brazilian football's two most valuable clubs. With Palmeiras leading the league on 22 points and riding a seven-game winning streak, Flamengo follow closely in second, four points behind after being held to a goalless draw by Botafogo last round.
For Flamengo, head coach Filipe Luís faces key absences due to injuries and suspension. Allan, Pulgar, De la Cruz, and Plata remain sidelined, and Wesley misses out through suspension after picking up his third yellow card. The return of Gerson, however, provides some relief in midfield following his recent suspension. The likely starting lineup features Rossi in goal; a back four of Varela, Léo Ortiz, Léo Pereira, and Alex Sandro; a midfield formed by Evertton Araújo, Gerson, and Arrascaeta; and a front three of Everton Cebolinha, Bruno Henrique, and Pedro.
Both teams not only dominate the Brasileirão standings but also top the continent in squad value. According to Transfermarkt figures, Flamengo are valued at approximately R$ 1.25 billion, trailing only Palmeiras (R$ 1.4 billion) among South American sides. The squads’ profiles differ: while Palmeiras rely on younger, high-value talents, Flamengo’s highest-valued players—such as Gerson, Pedro, and Arrascaeta—are all beyond their early twenties, underlining the club’s investment in experience.
The most valuable player in the match is Palmeiras’ 18-year-old Estêvão (valued at €55 million), but among Flamengo’s ranks, Gerson is currently appraised at €25 million and Pedro at €23 million, both significant figures in the Brazilian football landscape.
Recent years have seen this rivalry reach continental heights. Flamengo came out on top in the 2021 Supercopa do Brasil after a penalty shootout, but Palmeiras responded, clinching the 2023 edition with a 4-3 win. The two clubs also faced each other in the marquee 2021 Copa Libertadores final, when Palmeiras secured the trophy in extra time.
Sunday’s encounter will be officiated by Ramon Abatti Abel and broadcast nationwide. With both sides missing key midfielders and attackers, Flamengo’s hopes will rest on the returning Gerson and the attacking input of Pedro and Bruno Henrique as they attempt to close the gap at the top of the league.
