Benjamin Sesko was unveiled to Man Utd fans at Old Trafford on Saturday following the completion of his transfer from RB Leipzig.
The striker has signed a five-year deal with the Red Devils after they agreed to pay the east German outfit an initial fee of £66.26m (€76.5m), and an additional £7.36m (€8.5m) in performance-related add-ons.
Sesko was a highly sought-after player this summer; Arsenal had been linked with him since last summer but decided to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP instead, while Newcastle United made two unsuccessful bids for him.
The 22-year-old scored 39 goals in 97 appearances for Leipzig over the last two seasons, more than any other player under the age of 23 in Europe’s top five leagues during that period.
After the transfer was confirmed, Sesko said that he is excited to join a club with a “very special” history and aims to reach his “maximum level” while helping Man Utd win “the biggest trophies” again.
Director of football Jason Wilcox said the new signing “possesses a rare combination of electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football.”
Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim was “really, really happy” to welcome the Slovenia international to the club, praising his characteristics and workrate.
“He’s a player that, with all the information we have, we need to stop the guy from working! He’s not the opposite, so that is also important,” he said.
“He is really young, he’s good in the air, he’s good running the channels, he’s good on the ball. So I think he has a great potential.”
Sesko was paraded in front of the supporters ahead of their pre-season friendly against Fiorentina this afternoon, alongside their other summer arrivals, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon.
