I read the article on Monday about BBC Radio 5 Live and Newcastle United.

Dean explaining that he’d been listening to BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday morning whilst driving his missus to work, which when it got to the 7.30am main news bulletin, the sports coverage after the general news was discussing the weekend action in the Premier League.

In that look back on the Premier League Sunday action, the lead story was Trent Alexander-Arnold booed by Liverpool fans, Ruben Amorim and Man U continuing to be rubbish, then the Forest owner confronting Nuno on the pitch after the final whistle of their 2-2 draw with Leicester.

Absolutely no discussion at all of the huge Champions League chasing clash at St James’ Park, Newcastle United’s victory against Chelsea on Sunday.

Indicative of a wider malaise when it comes to reporting on events in and around St James’ Park from BBC Radio 5 Live and others in the media.

Following on from this, I was listening to the same channel just after 7.30am this (Tuesday) morning and couldn’t believe my ears!

Sports presenter Shourjo Sarker combining with the hapless Rick Edwards to assert, in the context of Sheffield United’s previous nine failed attempts to gain promotion through the play-offs, that this could be the year of the hoodoo being lifted in a wider sense in football and indeed sport in general.

Now, one would expect some mention of the events of 16 March 2025 at the national stadium, when a certain club from the North East of England broke their seventy year Wembley duck (or fifty-six year trophy drought), pick whichever you prefer.

But no, the focus was on Rory McIlroy (whoever that is) and Tottenham Hotspur, with Sarkar musing that they might end their trophy drought.

Surely there’d be mention of Newcastle United in this context. Alas, not. But hey, bless them, Spurs’ last trophy was won as long ago as 2008!
