Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku is back on Bayern Munich’s radar, according to The Athletic.
Nkunku is one of several players expected to leave Chelsea this summer, but at the moment, there are slim pickings when it comes to potential destinations.
Bayern are one of only two clubs to have shown interest in the Frenchman, alongside Manchester United.
But it appears the Germans may be ahead of their Premier League counterparts, who have their hands tied with the Bryan Mbeumo deal.
Nkunku is frustrated with his playing time at Chelsea. The 27-year-old has been forced to play second fiddle to Cole Palmer in the number 10 role and can’t even get ahead of the misfiring Nicolas Jackson at centre-forward.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has stressed several times that he doesn’t see Nkunku as a striker and has even admitted that he has found it difficult integrating the Frenchman into his system.
He values Nkunku as a squad player. But understandably, Nkunku isn’t satisfied.
His Chelsea career hasn’t gone according to plan, especially after arriving on the back of a prolific campaign where he won the top scorer award at RB Leipzig.
Nkunku hasn’t pushed for a move away from Chelsea, but will welcome the chance to talk to interested parties, and Bayern want to bring him back to Germany.
The Blues won’t stand in his way either, but David Ornstein claims “Chelsea will insist” on a permanent deal. They are also demanding at least £50 million for the Frenchman.
Nkunku’s situation at Chelsea has been exacerbated by the arrivals of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and Joao Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Pedro is the same profile as Nkunku but with a better work rate in the final third.
With Delap and Pedro in the mix as well as Jamie Gittens coming in from Borussia Dortmund, Nkunku will struggle to get a look-in next season.
Leaving the club appears to be the best solution for all parties involved, but Chelsea wouldn’t blink unless their demands are met. It helps their position that the player has four years left on his contract.
