Bayern Munich legend Philipp Lahm has revealed that Barcelona made a strong push to sign him in 2008, during the early days of Pep Guardiola’s reign at the club.
In an interview with Abendzeitung (h/t SPORT), Lahm confirmed that Barça were keen on bringing him to Camp Nou as part of their squad rebuild after Frank Rijkaard’s departure.
At the time, Joan Laporta and Txiki Begiristain were spearheading Barcelona’s transformation, identifying Lahm as a perfect fit for Guardiola’s tactical plans.
However, the German full-back ultimately chose loyalty over a fresh challenge, going on to become one of Bayern’s greatest-ever players and captaining them to a historic treble in 2013.
“In 2008 I had an offer from FC Barcelona. They insisted on the proposal. That was a recognition, but for me, there was nothing better than achieving maximum success with the club where I grew up and where I was later captain.” Lahm stated.

Lahm’s revelation comes at a time when Joshua Kimmich, another Bayern star, is heavily linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Kimmich’s contract expires in the summer, and he has yet to renew his deal with the Bavarian giants. Lahm sees the 30-year-old as a natural successor to Manuel Neuer as Bayern captain, stating:
“He’s been at the club for quite some time, he plays regularly and therefore he’s an important player. In reality, the logical thing to do is to appoint him captain. Of course, first he will have to renew his contract and then the coach will decide,” he added.
Barcelona’s interest in Kimmich is well-documented, but whether history will repeat itself remains to be seen.
Unlike Lahm, Kimmich may be more open to a new challenge, especially with Barça actively seeking a world-class midfielder to strengthen their squad.
