There’s fresh news in the ongoing saga of German national team captain Joshua Kimmich. Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund and board-member-for-sport Max Eberl commented on the player’s situation when conducting a post-match interview on Friday night. Freund and Eberl spoke to DAZN after Bayern’s Bundesliga victory over Stuttgart.
“There is so much speculation and reporting,” Freund began. “We have never given a status report on the state of the contract negotiations, and we won’t do that now either. I can only emphasise that we have had really good and fair discussions with Jo [Kimmich] over the past few months. We will continue to do that.
“A decision will be made very soon,” Freund nevertheless continued. “But we’re not going to comment on it now. So much has been written, but we’re in direct contact with Jo, That’s all that matters now.”
Eberl and Kimmich’s close friend on and off the pitch Leon Goretzka also chimed in. After what was a sensational night for him, Goretzka declared that he would be “very happy” if Kimmich stayed.
“We know what we have in each other,” Eberl noted. “We treat each other with a great deal of respect and we talk to each other all the time as equals. In general [however], no one is above the club. If a player decides [to leave], life will go on at FC Bayern Munich.”
