Nico Williams’ rejection of FC Barcelona for the second summer in a row to renew his contract with Athletic Club is the talk of the town at the moment.

After it appeared that the Blaugrana had secured the 22-year-old winger’s signing, he performed a shock U-turn to sign a long-term contract with the Basque club until 2035.

The sudden turnaround left Barça furious with the player and his entourage, who were assured about landing the Spaniard.

As it happens, the move also surprised Bayern Munich, who were also interested in Nico, but were rejected by the player.

Uli Hoeness reveals reactions

Now, speaking in an interview with BR24, Uli Honess, the honorary president of Bayern Munich, has shed light on how his club, as well as Barcelona, reacted to the Nico development.

“We all were [surprised] – I’m also in close contact with Hansi Flick, who is currently on holiday at Tegernsee, and they were also surprised because they had more or less already had an agreement,” said Hoeness.

When asked if he understood the motivation behind Nico’s decision, he added: “I don’t quite understand what he wants with it. But a few people probably want more money,” suggesting that Athletic might sell him for a bigger fee in the future.

Nico’s new contract runs until 2035 and sees his release clause increase from €58 million to somewhere around €100 million.

Barcelona, for their part, have closed the doors forever on a move for the Spanish international after being snubbed twice in two years.

Meanwhile, Hoeness also confirmed that Bayern Munich would not be revisiting their interest in Nico Williams next year.
