Barcelona’s plans for their goalkeepers next season are starting to take shape, and Wojciech Szczesny is right at the centre of it.

However, it is important to note that while everything points to the Polish goalkeeper staying with the club for at least another year, his contract technically expired on June 30.

Even though Barça and Szczesny have a full agreement for him to continue, an official announcement has yet to be made, and there are still no photos of him signing a new deal.

This situation may seem strange, but inside the club, there are no doubts about Szczesny’s future. A week ago, Barça sporting director Deco confirmed Szczesny would sign a new contract soon.

The plan is for him to stay for one more season with an option for an extra year. Right now, Szczesny is on holiday with his family, and it si not yet clear if he will sign before returning or wait until July 13, when the team’s medical tests start ahead of preseason.

Barcelona’s goalkeeping plans have been a hot topic this summer. After paying the buyout clause for Joan Garcia, the club now has a crowded goalkeeper roster.

As things stand, excluding Szczesny,  Barça have three other goalkeepers in their squad: Garcia, Inaki Pena, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

On top of that, the verbal agreement with Szczesny has been in place for weeks, meaning the club will have to make decisions soon to avoid having too many goalkeepers competing for limited minutes.

The Barcelonamanagement is working to finalise the details and officially announce Szczesny’s extension, as his experience and quality make him a key piece of Hansi Flick’s plans for the 2025/26 season.

Once Szczesny signs, the club will likely focus on resolving the futures of the other goalkeepers to avoid having an overloaded squad in goal.
