The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona are ready to push contract talks with Iñaki Peña back until the end of the campaign.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have on Thursday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.
Goalkeeper Peña has for his part of course been catapulted into an altogether more prominent role at Barcelona this season.
After Marc-André ter Stegen was condemned to a long-term spell on the sidelines, the Spaniard was tasked with stepping up to no.1 duties.
And to his credit, Peña, thus far, has done a solid job of as much.
Keeping Wojciech Szczęsny on the bench, the 25-year-old has been afforded 11 appearances, notching four clean sheets along the way.
As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by, then Peña has not yet managed to convince in the boardroom at Barcelona of his long-term prospects with the club.
As per a report from Mundo Deportivo:
‘For now Barça do not want to rush into offering a contract renewal to Iñaki Peña. Before making any decision, the sporting management will wait to analyse [his performance for] the entire season.’
Peña’s current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2026.
