Barcelona superstar drops potential hint about his new jersey number | OneFootball

There is a rather unique legacy at FC Barcelona when it comes to certain jersey numbers and players. After all, considering the club’s rich history and storied past, it only makes sense for them to have such players as historic icons. Even today, the new generation of Barcelona looks up to those standards.

However, perhaps no jersey number holds a greater value at Barcelona than the number ’10’ worn by some of the most iconic players in the club’s history. In fact, the players who donned that iconic number also happen to be some of the greatest players to ever grace the sport itself.

A legacy shared by Messi and Maradona

Furthermore, it perhaps reached the peak of its popularity and cultural importance after Lionel Messi decided to wear it on his back and established himself as the greatest player in football history while doing so. Interestingly, however, he was not the only Argentinian icon to wear it at Barça.

In fact, it was none other than Argentinian legend Diego Maradona who famously wore the number ’10’ in the past as well. While his time at Barcelona was not nearly as successful as that of his Argentine successor, it was still an iconic number being worn by one of the greatest players in football history.

The next step for Barcelona and Yamal’s hint

However, both of those players are now in the past for Barcelona and the future is what needs to be looked at. On that front, it is already clear enough that 17-year-old Lamine Yamal will be the player who will soon be given that big responsibility to carry on the legacy of that legendary number.

Now, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, Yamal has shared a story on Instagram featuring a picture of Diego Maradona in the Barcelona jersey of his era with the number ’10’ quite visible on his back. While this could mean just about anything, the timing seems way too convenient for it to be about anything other than the number that Yamal will soon be inheriting at Barcelona.

Moreover, this could have happened way sooner as well potentially but Ansu Fati was still at the club. As the direct successor of Lionel Messi in terms of inheriting the number ’10’, both Barcelona and Yamal respected his presence and had no issues with him holding on to that number for as long as he did.

However, Fati is now no longer at the club and has instead left to join AS Monaco over in Ligue 1. Consequently, that means that the number ’10’ jersey has been left vacant and there is perhaps no player more fitting or deserving of that privilege than the young teenage sensation at Barcelona.
