Barcelona star Marc-André ter Stegen has provided his take on the costly early moment which ultimately culminated in the Blaugrana being put to the sword for the first time this season.
Barca, of course, marked their return to action a short time ago.
Fresh off a perfect five wins from five to open the La Liga campaign, Hansi Flick’s troops turned their attentions towards matters on the continent, in a Champions League meeting with AS Monaco.
When all was said and done, however, a disappointing evening’s work saw Barcelona condemned to the wrong side of a 2-1 result.
The decisive moment en route to as much came just ten minutes into the action at the Stade Louis II, when the visitors found themselves reduced to ten men.
After Marc-André ter Stegen’s needless pass into midfield was cut out by Takumi Minamino, Eric García found himself the unlucky individual left to stumble into the back of the Japanese, culminating in a straight red card.
It was the former, rather than Eric, who was widely blamed for his part in the incident, with Ter Stegen’s pass having left his teammate well short.
Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the full-time whistle in Monaco, it therefore came as little surprise when the incident in question was put to Barcelona’s no.1 himself.
And, in his response, Ter Stegen went on to point towards ‘miscommunication’ as the key:
”There was a miscommunication with Eric on that play, I feel bad for him. Something happened that shouldn’t have happened to us, but that’s football. We stood up to our challenge with 10 men.”
