Barcelona are set to lose out on a possible financial boost, with former defender Óscar Mingueza close to renewing his contract with Celta Vigo.

As reported by SPORT, both the club and the player are leaning towards continuing together, which puts a pause on any transfer that could have earned Barça a tidy sum.

When Mingueza left Barcelona in the summer of 2022, the Catalan side did not charge a transfer fee. Instead, they secured a number of clauses that could lead to future income.

Most notably, Barça retained 50% of any future transfer fee if Celta Vigo were to sell him. This meant that if a club activated his €20 million release clause, Barcelona would receive €10 million.

There was also a clause giving Barcelona the right of first refusal if they ever wanted to re-sign Mingueza.

All these mechanisms were designed to make up for the initial free transfer and to benefit financially if the player’s market value rose.

Celta choose stability over profit

Mingueza’s current deal with Celta runs until 2026, but talks about extending it are already at an advanced stage. From both the player’s camp and the club’s point of view, the idea of a renewal seems the most likely outcome.

Celta are aware that even if they sold Mingueza, only 50% of the fee would stay with them, as the rest would go to Barcelona.

Because of this, the club prefers to hold on to a player who has been performing very well and providing consistency in their defence.

For Barcelona, this means that any potential income from a Mingueza transfer is now delayed indefinitely.

While the deal they struck gave them long-term financial hope, it now appears that they will have to wait much longer to see any of it materialise, if at all.
