Barcelona are planning for the future of their goalkeeping department and even though it is still unclear as to whether they will sign a new player for the position in the summer, some potential targets have been admired.

One such player that the Blaugrana like as a possible option for the goalkeeping position is RCD Espanyol star Joan Garcia.

Indeed, the Spaniard is regarded very highly at Barça and is seen as an option to reinforce the goalkeeping department if they do decide to sign a player.

Move ruled out

However, as per the latest update from SPORT, while Joan Garcia is admired by Barcelona and several top European clubs, the Catalan giants’ financial struggles make any potential move highly improbable.

As of now, Espanyol have received no approach from Barça, whereas other clubs have already shown serious interest.

Furthermore, the report adds that Espanyol are unwilling to negotiate with the Blaugrana. Instead, the club would demand the full payment of his €30 million release clause – something they would be open to negotiating with other clubs.

Espanyol’s sporting director, Fran Garagarza, recently acknowledged that the club will need to make a sale this summer, with all signs pointing towards Garcia’s departure.

He stated that while Espanyol would aim for a “good sale” without necessarily demanding the full release clause, there would be no negotiations if Barcelona made an offer.

This stance, combined with strong Premier League interest, makes a move to Barça virtually impossible.

Arsenal the likely destination

Arsenal, having failed with a move for Garcia last summer, remain in pole position, having been in discussions with his camp for over a year. However, no final decision has been made.

Reports have also linked Paris Saint-Germain with interest in the 23-year-old, though Espanyol have yet to receive any contact from the French club.

In recent days, Manchester United has emerged as a serious contender, having officially explored the possibility of signing Garcia. All these factors make a move to Barcelona practically impossible.
