FC Barcelona is almost always under the spotlight, and the club’s players are a victim of that as well. Given their global reach and popularity, it is hardly a surprising reality for them. However, at times there is also a lot of unwarranted criticism of Barcelona and those players as well.

Such seems to be the case for 18-year-old Lamine Yamal in recent weeks. Following his recent 18th birthday, the young Barcelona star organised a private party to celebrate the occasion and it involved different kinds of people from various different backgrounds there.

However, even though it was a private party, the media and people online began to talk about it and criticise it. One of the major issues that many people seemed to have was with Yamal’s decision to organise such a party at such a young age.

Consequently, a common critique was that Yamal would end up wasting his career early by going down this path. However, in a recent interview with Mundo Deportivo, even Barcelona president Joan Laporta was asked about the topic.

When asked if he would advise him differently or whether or not the criticism was excessive, Laporta clarified his own stance on the whole ordeal:

“It was a private party, and Lamine knows that from now on, everything he does will be under the spotlight and subject to scrutiny. In my view, he simply threw an 18th birthday party — and honestly, what I regret is not being there! It was an extraordinary event, everyone had a great time, and they all looked very sharp. Why did he celebrate it like that? Because they’re 18 years old!”

Full confidence in the young Barcelona winger

Instead of criticising the new number ‘10’ of Barcelona, Laporta instead chose to defend his actions. He claimed that he continues to work just as hard as anyone at the club, and even congratulated the young winger:

“They picked a fun, youthful theme, and he celebrated with friends, entertainers, influencers, YouTubers, TikTokers, and singers. From that perspective, I’m glad he had a great time. It was a private event, and afterward, he showed up to training and worked as hard as anyone. So there’s nothing to criticize — quite the opposite, I congratulate him. I’m happy they enjoyed a great birthday celebration.”

As for Yamal’s future at Barcelona, that remains fully sorted. The player has already renewed his contract with the club until 2031, and the Catalan giants remain confident in his ability to lead this project forward under the guidance of Hansi Flick.
