Barcelona’s match against Real Sociedad was indeed a hard-fought battle, just as many anticipated. The team struggled under the pressure, finding themselves in one of their toughest encounters of the season.
Adding to their worries, manager Hansi Flick had to deal with the unfortunate news of Frenkie de Jong’s injury during the game, reports SPORT.
The incident began in the 25th minute when de Jong, while vying for possession, took a hit that led to discomfort in his leg. Despite this, he managed to return to the pitch after a brief pause, indicating that the pain might have subsided temporarily.
However, his troubles resurfaced just before halftime, around the 39th minute, this time focusing on his ankle.
Although he pushed through until the halftime break, the medical staff assessed him in the dressing room and decided he could not continue. Dani Olmo was brought on as his substitute for the second half.

The scene in the dressing room reportedly left de Jong visibly distressed. His frustrations likely stemmed from the implications of another possible setback in his career, as he has struggled to regain full fitness and form in recent months.
Physical setbacks have interrupted his progress, leaving him without a stable run in the squad. After the match, the Dutch midfielder was seen limping, which suggested that his condition might be more severe than initially anticipated.
This injury is especially concerning for de Jong, as he had recently been recalled to the Netherlands national team. He last played for the Netherlands on September 2023, in a win against Ireland, marking over a year since his last international appearance.
Should the injury prove serious, de Jong might miss another chance to join his national squad and could also be sidelined for several upcoming Barcelona matches, affecting both his club and country responsibilities.
