After enduring an injury-riddled campaign last season, Barcelona midfield virtuoso Pedri has emphatically announced his return to the pinnacle of world football with masterful performances against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
The Spanish international’s recent displays have not merely marked a comeback to his best level, but in fact, they have showcased a player performing at levels surpassing his previous best.
At the Santiago Bernabeu during El Clasico this past Saturday, Pedri delivered a midfield masterclass that would have left even the most ardent Real Madrid supporters in awe.
The 21-year-old gem dominated the middle of the park with a display of technical brilliance and tactical intelligence.
In a direct comparison with Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid’s superstar midfielder, Pedri’s superiority was stark. The Spaniard more than doubled Bellingham’s involvement with 71 touches to 31, showcased superior passing accuracy, and made more ball recoveries.
Following the introduction of Frenkie de Jong at half-time, Pedri seamlessly transitioned to an advanced role, while continuing to control and dictate the play with his abilities.

This performance against Real Madrid was not an isolated incident either. After all, against Bayern Munich only a few days before, Pedri exhibited the same floating presence across the pitch, excelling in both build-up play and defensive duties.
After bursting onto the scene at Barcelona during the 2020/21 season, injuries threatened to derail Pedri’s trajectory.
However, the 21-year-old’s response has been exemplary – working diligently in silence while etching his name on the ‘world’s best midfielder’ lists. His recent performances, particularly against elite opposition, have only strengthened his claim to that status.
In his last two appearances, the Barcelona maestro, who is in talks over a new contract, has overshadowed two players considered his contemporaries and rivals – Jamal Musiala and Jude Bellingham.
Pedri has not just returned to his previous level but is showing that he is capable of reaching new, greater heights. His control, vision, and ability to dictate play from midfield have been critical to Barcelona’s fine start to the season.
As Barcelona continues their resurgence under Flick, Pedri’s return to peak form could not be more timely. His performances against Bayern and Real Madrid have not just highlighted his individual brilliance but they have also underlined his essential role in the team and their aspirations for domestic and European success.
