According to a recent report from SPORT, it has come to light that Barcelona’s financial issues are not limited to the first team.
The club’s youth and reserve setups are also feeling the strain, with the situation of Mamadou Mbacke standing out as a prime example of poor planning and difficult circumstances.
Mbacke, a 22-year-old centre-back who joined Barça Atletic for around €2 million, currently earns a salary that is considered excessive for a player competing in Spain’s fourth tier, the Segunda Federacion.
Mbacke has now spent two seasons at Barça Atletic, but his performances have been inconsistent.
While players like Andres Cuenca and Alexis Olmedo have managed to earn training sessions under new first-team manager Hansi Flick, Mbacke has remained on the fringes, failing to make a strong enough impression to push for promotion.
From a footballing point of view, the Senegalese defender has not shown the progress the club expected, and from an economic standpoint, his wages are unsustainable for the level he is playing at.
His salary also counts towards Barcelona’s financial fair play calculations, further complicating matters for the club.
Initially, there was hope that Mbacke could either break into the senior squad or be sold for a decent fee.
However, no concrete offers have arrived so far, and Barcelona are now actively looking for an exit route. Ideally, they hope to secure a transfer, but if no clubs come forward, a loan or even contract termination might be considered.
With just one year remaining on his deal, the club is eager to find a solution soon. They do not want to carry his salary through another season, especially without any tangible contribution to the squad’s progress.
