FC Barcelona pride themselves on the talent that their fabled academy, La Masia, churns out year after year.

While the top priority for the Blaugrana remains developing players for the first team from their academy, not all can make it through to the big stage.

As such, the Catalans’ technical department is also profiting through a strategic commercial approach involving the La Masia players who move on from the club – via financial returns through player sales, sell-on clauses, and training rights.

Nearly €100 million in two years

In fact, as reported by SPORT, Barcelona have generated €96 million in income over the past two years from academy graduates or young signings for the reserve team who were later sold.

This figure includes direct transfers, post-loan buyout clauses, and percentages from future sales. The strategy, driven by the club’s technical department, has been to include such clauses in nearly every outgoing deal, ensuring long-term gains.

Here are the operations (18 total) from which Barça earned revenue in the last two years:

  • €21.8 million — Nico Gonzalez
  • €10 million — Mika Faye
  • €10 million — Julian Araujo
  • €9 million — Chadi Riad
  • €6 million — Marc Guiu
  • €5 million — Unai Hernandez
  • €3 million — Estanis Pedrola (loan buyout)
  • €6 million — Alex Valle
  • €500,000 — Eman Kospo
  • €1.2 million — Sergi Dominguez
  • €500,000 — Noah Darvich
  • €8 million — Jean-Clair Todibo (sell-on from Nice to West Ham)
  • €1.75 million — Ludovit Reis (sell-on from Hamburg to Club Brugge)
  • €600,000 — Ilaix Moriba (to Celta Vigo)
  • €500,000 — Alex Collado (to Al-Shamal)
  • €200,000 — Ferran Jutgla (to Celta Vigo)
  • €5 million — Pablo Torre (Barça retain 50% of future sale)
  • €7.5 million — Abde Ezzalzouli

Of the €96 million total, more than €20 million has come in this summer window. The most notable deal was the sell-on fee from Jean-Clair Todibo’s move to West Ham. Barça had retained 20% of a future sale when he joined Nice, resulting in an €8 million payout.

Even from players who never wore a first-team shirt, Barça are seeing return on investment. Sell-on clauses and training rights are turning academy exits into long-term financial assets.

Through a blend of development and business strategy, La Masia continues to contribute to the club – on the pitch and in the accounts.
