FC Barcelona have set their sights on strengthening one of the most sensitive areas of the squad: the goalkeeper position.

Even though the club sporting director Deco insisted that there are no immediate plans to reinforce the department, concerns remain over Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s form following his injury.

Meanwhile, Wojciech Szczesny is yet to make a decision on his continuity, with his current contract running out on June 30.

Barcelona eyeing Lucas Chevalier

As such, Barcelona’s sporting management, led by Deco, has identified Lucas Chevalier, current Lille goalkeeper, as a key target, reports Fichajes.

The Blaugrana are aware that Ter Stegen’s time as the undisputed starter may be approaching its final chapter.

Though the German has reclaimed his place between the posts after a long absence, there is ongoing concern within both the coaching staff and the board regarding his medium-term reliability.

Chevalier, only 23 years old, has emerged as one of Ligue 1’s standout goalkeepers, producing performances and statistics that have drawn the attention of major European clubs.

As per the report, Barcelona view him as the ideal profile – young, confident, and ready to take on responsibilities from day one, while also learning under Ter Stegen’s guidance.

However, the Catalan club are not alone in its pursuit. Real Madrid have also been monitoring Chevalier as part of their succession planning for Thibaut Courtois.

This could force Barça to move swiftly to avoid a potential bidding war for the Frenchman’s signature, although other options like Joan Garcia (RCD Espanyol) and Bart Verbruggen (Brighton & Hove Albion) are also being considered.
